Puncheon

/PUN-chun/

A large oak barrel, typically 450-500 liters.

Full Definition

A puncheon is a large barrel holding approximately 450-500 liters (about twice a barrique). The larger size reduces oak influence per volume and slows oxidation. Common in the Rhone Valley, Australia, and for wines where subtle oak is preferred. Also spelled 'ponchon.'
