Petrol

/PET-rol/

Kerosene-like aroma in aged Riesling.

Full Definition

Petrol (kerosene, diesel) is an aroma that develops in aged Riesling, caused by 1,1,6-trimethyl-1,2-dihydronaphthalene (TDN). It ranges from subtle honey-petroleum to pronounced diesel. Loved by some, disliked by others. It's more pronounced in warm-climate Rieslings and increases with age. Considered varietal character, not a fault.
