Alcohol measurement system, double the ABV percentage.

Full Definition

Proof is an alcohol measurement where US proof equals double the ABV percentage (80 proof = 40% ABV). Historically from testing gunpowder ignition with spirits. Rarely used for wine but applies to fortified wines and spirits. UK formerly used different proof system.
