Barnyard

/BARN-yard/

Farm-like aromas, often from Brettanomyces.

Full Definition

Barnyard describes animal, farm-like aromas - hay, manure, horse blanket, leather - typically caused by Brettanomyces yeast. At low levels, some consider it adds complexity; at high levels, it's a fault. Traditionally accepted in some Rhone and Bordeaux wines but increasingly rejected by modern palates.
