Wine developing slower than expected for its age.

Full Definition

Backward describes a wine that is less developed than expected for its age - it shows younger, tighter character than similar wines from the same vintage. Backward wines often have excellent aging potential but need more time. It's not a fault but requires patience. The opposite of forward or precocious.
