Sulfites (sulfur dioxide, SO2) are added to wine as antioxidant and antimicrobial preservatives. All wine contains some natural sulfites from fermentation. Added sulfites prevent oxidation and spoilage. 'Contains Sulfites' labeling is required above 10 ppm. Sweet wines need more SO2; reds need less than whites. Some people are sensitive.
