Super Tuscan

/SOO-per TUS-kun/

Premium Tuscan wines using non-traditional varieties.

Full Definition

Super Tuscan refers to premium Tuscan wines that broke DOC rules, typically using Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, or 100% Sangiovese, often in barriques. Pioneers like Sassicaia and Tignanello in the 1970s proved Italian wines could match Bordeaux quality. Many were labeled IGT Toscana. Some are now DOC Bolgheri.
