Heavy describes wines that feel ponderous, overly full, and lacking freshness or lift. Usually negative, suggesting excess alcohol, extract, or oak without balancing acidity. Heavy wines tire the palate quickly. Distinguished from full-bodied (positive) by lack of elegance and refreshment.
