Carmenere is a red grape variety originally from Bordeaux, now primarily grown in Chile. Long thought to be Merlot, its identity was confirmed via DNA in 1994. It produces wines with dark fruit, herbal notes, and green pepper character when underripe. Chile has made it a signature variety.
