American Oak
/uh-MER-ih-kun OHK/Oak from North America with distinctive sweet, vanilla character.
Full Definition
American oak (Quercus alba) has wider grain than French oak, releasing flavor more quickly and intensely. It contributes pronounced vanilla, coconut, dill, and sweet spice notes. Less expensive than French oak, it's traditional for Rioja and widely used in Australia. Some consider it too aggressive for delicate wines.
