Smoky

/SMOH-kee/

Aromas of smoke, often from oak or terroir.

Full Definition

Smoky describes aromas suggesting smoke, wood fire, or char. Can derive from toasted oak barrels, certain terroirs (northern Rhone), or actual smoke exposure from wildfires. Subtle smokiness adds complexity; excessive smokiness from fire damage is a fault (smoke taint).
