Negociant

/nay-go-see-ON/

A merchant who buys grapes or wine to blend and sell.

Full Definition

A negociant buys grapes, juice, or finished wine from growers, then blends, ages, bottles, and sells under their own label. Important in Burgundy, Champagne, and Bordeaux. Large houses like Louis Jadot or Louis Latour are negociants. Contrast with grower-producers who make wine from their own vineyards.
