Dirty describes wines with unpleasant earthy, barnyard, or musty aromas that suggest poor hygiene, brett contamination, or cellar problems. Distinguished from positive earthiness, dirty implies something went wrong. Often caused by brettanomyces, dirty barrels, or poor sanitation.
