Clarification

/klar-ih-fih-KAY-shun/

Removing suspended particles from wine.

Full Definition

Clarification removes proteins, dead yeast, grape particles, and other matter that cause cloudiness. Methods include natural settling (racking), fining (adding agents that bind with particles), and filtration. Over-clarification can strip color, flavor, and texture. Some wines are bottled unfined and unfiltered.
