Cascina delle Rose
Small Barbaresco estate run by the Giovannini-Bianco family in Tre Stelle, Rio Sordo, and Marcorino. Known for single-vineyard Barbarescos alongside Dolcetto, Barbera, and Langhe Nebbiolo.
### History Cascina delle Rose is a small family estate based in the Barbaresco village of Tre Stelle, operated by Giovanna Rizzolio and Italo Sobrino. The farm predates their tenure as a wine-focused property; like many cascine in the Langhe, it spent generations as a mixed agricultural holding before the family committed fully to viticulture. Giovanna has been the central figure in shaping the estate's identity and is widely credited as the driving force behind both vineyard and cellar decisions. The estate has remained resolutely small-scale, with no apparent ambitions toward expansion or outside investment.
### Vineyards The estate holds parcels in three of Barbaresco's named vineyard areas: Tre Stelle, Rio Sordo, and Marcorino, each of which becomes a separate Barbaresco bottling. Tre Stelle sits close to the winery itself. Rio Sordo is one of the larger and better-known MGA sites in the appellation, with a cooler, more shaded exposure that tends to produce structured, slower-developing wines. Marcorino is a smaller, less frequently discussed site. The estate also grows Dolcetto, Barbera, and Nebbiolo for the Langhe DOC. Specific soil breakdowns, altitudes, and hectare counts for individual parcels have not been widely published. Farming practices are reported to lean toward the careful and interventionist-light side, though formal organic or biodynamic certification details are not publicly confirmed.
### Winemaking The Barbarescos are vinified as single-vineyard wines, allowing site differences to express themselves separately rather than being blended into a single estate cuvee. Fermentation follows fairly classical Langhe practice for a small producer of this type, with extended maceration on the skins for the Nebbiolo-based wines. Aging involves oak, though the estate is not associated with the heavy barrique regimes of the modernist school; the wines suggest a preference for larger vessels and longer aging timelines, in keeping with a more traditional Barbaresco profile. The Barbera d'Alba Superiore bottling, named Donna Elena, receives oak aging consistent with the Superiore designation requirements. The Dolcetto d'Alba, labeled A Elizabeth, is made for earlier drinking. No filtration philosophy has been prominently documented.
