Native or indigenous grape variety from a region.
Full Definition
Autochthonous describes grape varieties native to or originating in a particular region, as opposed to international varieties introduced from elsewhere. Italy has hundreds of autochthonous varieties (Nebbiolo, Sangiovese, Fiano). Interest in indigenous grapes has grown as regions seek distinctive identity beyond international varieties.
