Giacomo Fenocchio

BaroloItaly

A traditionalist Barolo estate working several of the appellation's most respected crus, including Bussia, Cannubi, and Villero. Long macerations and large Slavonian oak define the house style.

History

Giacomo Fenocchio is a family estate based in Monforte d'Alba, with roots in the Langhe going back several generations. The domaine takes its name from an earlier Giacomo Fenocchio, and the estate has remained in family hands through successive generations. The current custodian, Claudio Fenocchio, has run the property since the 1980s and is the figure most associated with the estate's contemporary identity. Claudio is a committed traditionalist, not by default but by conviction, and his approach has remained consistent even as much of the Barolo appellation moved toward shorter macerations and smaller oak in the 1990s and 2000s. That steadiness has given the wines a recognizable signature across decades. The estate is small by commercial standards, focused on a handful of named crus rather than volume.

Vineyards

Fenocchio holds parcels in several of Barolo's most significant named vineyards: Bussia in Monforte d'Alba, Cannubi in Barolo, Villero in Castiglione Falletto, and Castellero in Barolo. Each site brings a distinct geological character. Bussia sits on compact Helvetian soils with high sand and mineral content, producing wines with structure and aromatic lift. Cannubi, arguably the most famous single vineyard in the appellation, occupies a central saddle in the Barolo commune on mixed Tortonian and Helvetian soils. Villero, in Castiglione Falletto, is known for its Tortonian blue-grey marls and tends toward fuller, more tannic expressions. Specific details on farming certification are not publicly documented, but the estate is understood to work conventionally, with attention given to vineyard age and low yields.

Winemaking

Fenocchio makes Barolo in the classical manner: extended maceration on the skins, sometimes running to several weeks, followed by aging in large-format Slavonian oak botti rather than barriques. This regime produces wines that are slow to open, firm in tannin when young, and built for the cellar. There is no reported use of rotofermenters or concentration techniques. Native yeast fermentation is consistent with the estate's conservative approach, though this is not formally documented. The wines are bottled without aggressive filtration, in keeping with traditional practice. The result across the cru bottlings is a family resemblance: dark fruit, dried roses, tar, and a structural spine that rewards patience. Of the crus, Bussia is the estate's longest-held and perhaps most representative vineyard, and the wine from that site is typically considered the benchmark expression of the house style.
