Kai Schätzel Riesling Niersteiner Kabinett 2018
This Niersteiner Kabinett draws from fruit previously destined for a vineyard-designated Hipping bottling, with additional contributions from Ölberg and Pettenthal, a consolidation that reflects Rheinhessen VDP members' push to concentrate premier cru-quality fruit under village designations. The nose is immediate and inviting: pit-tinged apple, tangerine, and white peach with a faint seed-like bitterness threading through. On the palate, the wine is buoyant and juicy, with a lightly oily texture that keeps things plush without losing lift. Smoky, stony, and alkaline impressions press into the finish with real presence, vivid and mouth-filling, with a crackling freshness that makes the high residual sugar feel almost beside the point. Remarkably composed.
