Günther Steinmetz Neumagener Rosengärtchen Von den Terrassen 2018
Deceptively light at 12% alcohol yet bone-dry in feel, this Rosengärtchen from the terraced hillside site opens with a bittersweet floral perfume layered over zesty lime, seed-flecked apple, raw hazelnut, and rain-dampened slate. The nose has real penetrating depth, the kind that lingers. On the palate, it's glossy yet buoyant, driven by a core of pulverized stone that feels almost geological in its specificity, not unlike the site's history: the cave marking the Rosengärtchen landmark was originally a slate mine, the extracted material used to enrich surrounding vineyard soils. The finish is long, peppery, and alive with inner-mouth perfume and a vivid citrus charge. Steinmetz has expanded his holdings here recently, and the wine carries the weight of that ambition.
