Rudi Pichler Riesling Smaragd Kirchweg 2016

Lime zest, grapefruit pith and crushed mustard seed leap from the glass with a brightness that feels almost incongruous at Smaragd weight, yet here it is, genuinely light on its feet. There's a bittersweet floral dimension too, iris and gentian drifting through the mid-palate like perfume. The finish turns darker and more mineral: wet stone, iodine, a dusting of pumice. That interplay between crackling citrus fruit and brooding stony depth is what makes Kirchweg so compelling. Pichler's parcel sits near the northern edge of the site, where coarse pebbles and small cobbles dominate, a distinction he draws to Schütt, another rare flat Wachau grand cru where underlying stones appear to drive the quality. Drink now through 2035.
