Ninety-year-old Lötter vineyard Cinsault, whole bunch fermented and aged in used French oak. Red cherry, dried herbs and damp earth on the nose, with the stem character sitting front and center right now. On the palate it's medium-bodied and frankly a little rough around the edges, grainy tannins, brambly fruit, tobacco, more rustic than refined at this stage. The whole bunch treatment feels a touch heavy-handed, though this wine's origins are compelling enough to warrant patience. Worth revisiting in five or more years to see whether time smooths the edges.
