Alzinger Grüner Veltliner Smaragd Loibenberg 2015
Tasted from cask in June 2016, with only initial months in tank behind it. Peach and pear dominate, fleshed out across a broad, generous frame that suits both the vintage warmth and the Loibenberg site. There's a roughness here, the finish runs a little hot and the personality feels somewhat unfocused, but coffee, Burley tobacco, a note of fruit pit and incisive black pepper keep things interesting. This is also a reminder that Alzinger's Loibenberg holdings are meaningfully varied: their Grüner Veltliner parcels sit on loess-overlain soils in the lower, warmer reaches of an already fast-ripening site, and that warmth shows clearly in the glass.
Alzinger
→Alzinger is one of the Wachau's most quietly authoritative estates, producing Riesling and Grüner Veltliner from premier sites in Loiben and Dürnstein with a precision that rewards patience.
