Egon Müller Riesling Scharzhofberger Auslese Goldkapsel 2014

Candied citrus peel, pear eau-de-vie and fresh herbs open the nose, with botrytis honey threading through and adding a luxurious, almost waxy depth. Intensely concentrated on the palate yet somehow lifted, the Scharzhofberg's signature slate minerality keeps everything taut and grounded, preventing the sweetness from going soft. There's a savory, umami-like quality here that catches you off guard, something between miso and salted caramel, and it gives the wine a complexity well beyond its dessert-wine category. Despite the sheer weight of fruit and extract, the acidity cuts through with Spätlese-like vivacity. Drink now through 2045.
