Montestefano in a brooding mood. Dark plum, tar, leather and licorice are shot through with smoke and game, giving the wine a raw, almost feral quality. The tannins are enormous, grippy and unyielding, and the fruit mass behind them is equally imposing. Finesse is not the point here; this is Barbaresco painted with a heavy hand, muscular and uncompromising in the way this cru so often is. Put it away and be patient. Drink 2030–2045.
