F.X. Pichler Riesling Reserve M 2013
Sourced exclusively from the Loibenberg, this 2013 'M' carries the Reserve designation because 16 grams of residual sugar left it outside Smaragd classification, a technical distinction that shapes everything about the wine. Aged in a once-used 2,500-liter cask, it picks up faint traces of resin and baking spice from the wood, but these fold neatly into honey and cocoa powder alongside lush peach, pineapple, pink grapefruit and mango. At just over 13% alcohol, it feels more plush than powerful, creamy in texture, generous in fruit, yet bitterness from peach kernel and the tart edge of pineapple core and grapefruit rind keep it from tipping into excess. The finish is genuinely impressive, stretching long with layered complexity that seems to open further the longer you sit with it. Not the most immediate wine in the cellar, but rewarding in a way that builds.
