Elio Grasso Barolo Ginestra Vigna Casa Mate 2009
Dark and brooding from the outset, currant, black cherry, tobacco and mocha layered over a spiced, earthy foundation. Broad and plush through the mid-palate, with a richness that takes time to open up; early on it holds more back than the Gavarini, but patience and air reward you with real depth. Tannins are substantial yet well-distributed, arriving late and carrying the finish out to impressive length. The clay-limestone origins and the Grassos' disciplined approach, extended maceration with temperature carefully controlled below 28°C, yield a wine that feels structured without sacrificing elegance. Give it time.
