Bodegas Riojanas Monte Real Rioja Crianza 2003

Strawberry, raspberry, and a lift of menthol and tobacco on the nose, more character here than the typical Crianza promises. Peppery red fruit on entry, firm and somewhat austere, with a dry edge that doesn't give easily. Air draws out plum and cherry preserve, riper and rounder, though the finish stays roasted and slightly parched. The 2003 heat has left its mark and this won't resolve further, drink now.
