Forty-plus years in and the 1981 Viña Cubillo is still very much alive. Dried cherry, cassis, wild herbs and a chalky mineral undercurrent, the fruit has quieted but nothing has fallen apart. Light-bodied and silky, with a finish that lingers well beyond what the frame suggests. López de Heredia's unhurried hand is written all over it. A dignified old Rioja.
