History
Steve Campbell farms the vineyard near Annapolis in the far north-western corner of Sonoma County. Anthill Farms has been its defining customer, bottling a Campbell Ranch Pinot Noir and, from a Wente selection planted in 1999, a Chardonnay as well. Anthill was founded in 2003 by three Williams Selyem alumni, Anthony Filiberti, David Low and Webster Marquez, and buys fruit rather than owning land.
The Site
Roughly 750 feet up, a few miles inland from the Pacific near Annapolis, on Goldridge soil, with yields around two tons per acre. The site falls inside the West Sonoma Coast AVA created in 2022, but every label checked from 2017 through 2023 reads Sonoma Coast, which is the appellation that governs here.
Vines and Blocks
Pinot Noir across most of the planting, with a block of Chardonnay in the Wente selection planted in 1999.
The Wines
Anthill Farms' Campbell Ranch Pinot Noir is the wine the site is known for, cold-grown and structured; the Chardonnay is made in much smaller volume.
