History
The vineyard was planted in 1905 on sand dunes at the interior edge of Oakley. The land is owned by the Contra Costa County Water District; Morgan Twain-Peterson's Bedrock Wine Co. has leased and farmed it since 2012 and released its first Pato designate in 2016. The Historic Vineyard Society lists the site. Ridge and Neyers made Pato wines historically, Neyers as late as 2003.
The Site
Delhi sand dunes in Oakley, Contra Costa County. Labels historically read Contra Costa County as a county designation; the formal Contra Costa AVA, nested inside San Francisco Bay and Central Coast, was established on 15 March 2024.
Vines and Blocks
A Zinfandel-dominant field blend with an unusually heavy interplanting of Petite Sirah, plus Mataro and Carignane. The Petite Sirah proportion is what distinguishes it from the other surviving Oakley plantings.
The Wines
Bedrock bottles it as Pato Vineyard Heritage, and Fine Disregard makes a varietal Mataro from the site.
