Position
Rive lies in the northeastern part of La Morra's territory. Negretti, who bottle a single-cru Rive, place their parcel at 44°39' north, 7°57' east, roughly two kilometres north-east of the village, which puts the cru well clear of the western amphitheatre above the Annunziata hamlet where the commune's grand names cluster.
The delimitation registers Rive at 210 to 270 metres with a south-east exposure. Both figures are diagnostic. The altitude band is narrow and low for La Morra, where several sites run above 300 metres, and the south-east aspect gives the slope its light through the morning and early afternoon and takes it off before the hottest part of the day.
Geology
Rive sits on Sant'Agata Fossili marl, the Tortonian formation that underlies most of La Morra and the northern half of the Barolo zone. Berry Bros. & Rudd place the Rive vineyards farmed by Figli Luigi Oddero on Tortonian marl of the Sant'Agata formation, and record grey-blue and whitish banding where it has weathered. Negretti record their own parcel more plainly as clay and calcareous soil.
This is the formation that separates La Morra from the Serravallian Lequio sediments of Serralunga and Monforte, and it is the standard explanation offered for the more perfumed, earlier-drinking register of La Morra Barolo.
The Wines
The two most widely reviewed bottlings point the same way. Monica Larner scored the 2018 Negretti Barolo Rive 94 points in The Wine Advocate, describing it as "a balanced and fresh Nebbiolo with a more accessible personality" and calling it "a terrific find." Berry Bros. & Rudd's notes on the 2021 Figli Luigi Oddero Specola stay in a red-fruited and floral register: rose and mint in the aromatics, then red berries, cherry, liquorice and warm baking spice on the palate, a lift of citrus peel, acidity fresh, and tannins read as both velvety and chalk-fine.
Both notes read red-fruited and floral rather than tarry or resinous, which is consistent with the Sant'Agata marl beneath the site.
Producers
Negretti bottle a single-cru Barolo Rive. The parcel measures 2.2 hectares and sits between 230 and 260 metres on clay and limestone, planted during the 1980s at 4,500 to 5,000 vines per hectare. Fruit is chilled before fermentation starts; skin contact runs twelve to sixteen days in steel held between 24 and 29 degrees; malolactic proceeds without inoculation; the wine then spends two years in 2,500-litre casks of French and Austrian oak.
Figli Luigi Oddero farm the centre of the cru and bottle it as Barolo Specola, from vineyards at around 230 metres on Sant'Agata marl. The bottling takes its name from a small tower standing at the middle of Rive. An earlier proprietor raised it as a vantage point over the vineyard crews and issued his orders from the top of it by megaphone, and the tower now serves as the device on the estate's labels. The estate and its importer describe the parcel as a south-facing amphitheatre, while the official delimitation registers Rive's exposure as south-east. The delimitation is the authority for the cru as a whole, and the estate's "south-facing" is best read as a description of its own parcel. Rosenthal Wine Merchant, the American importer, credits that sheltered position at the heart of the cru for the density of fruit and the fine drawing of the structure.
