Red Car

United States

Red Car produces Pinot Noir, Syrah, and Chardonnay from the Sonoma Coast, working with both estate fruit and select vineyards across this large, climatically varied appellation. The wines lean toward restraint and site expression.

### History Red Car was founded in the early 2000s by Carroll Kemp and Mark Estrin, who named the project after the historic Pacific Electric streetcars that once ran through Southern California. The winery was built around a conviction that the cooler reaches of the Sonoma Coast could produce Pinot Noir and Syrah with genuine weight and complexity without sacrificing freshness. In the years following its founding, Red Car acquired estate vineyard land and expanded its single-vineyard program, adding Chardonnay and eventually Cabernet Sauvignon to a roster that had been dominated by the two Rhone-sympathetic grapes. Ownership and winemaking responsibilities have shifted over the years, and the project has at various points operated with a lean team. It has remained an independent, small-production operation throughout.

### Vineyards Red Car's estate vineyard and its contracted sites sit within the true Sonoma Coast, the oceanside western fringe of the appellation rather than the warmer inland sections that also carry the Sonoma Coast designation. The Mohrhardt Ridge Vineyard, which appears across both Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon bottlings, sits at elevation in the Fort Ross-Seaview area, where fog-driven diurnal swings are significant and the growing season is long and cool. Heaven and Earth Vineyard, associated with their Pinot Noir program, occupies similarly rugged terrain. Zephyr Farms provides fruit for one of the Chardonnay bottlings. Soils across these sites tend toward the rocky, low-fertility types common to the coastal ridges: fractured sandstone, loam over clay, and in places the Goldridge sandy loam that appears throughout the appellation. Specific farming certifications are not publicly documented in detail, though the operation has described itself as farming with sustainability as a guiding principle.

### Winemaking Red Car has consistently worked with native and ambient yeasts across its fermentations, favoring a hands-off approach in the cellar that matches the restrained picking decisions in the vineyard. Pinot Noir is fermented in open-top vessels with extended maceration times that vary by vintage and site. Oak usage is moderate, with a preference for larger format and older barrels to limit direct wood influence, particularly on the single-vineyard Pinot Noirs. The Syrah program, which includes both an estate bottling and a broader Sonoma Coast blend, tends toward the savory, cooler-climate style: more olive tapenade and smoked meat than jammy fruit. Chardonnay sees barrel fermentation and some time on lees, though without the heavy new-oak treatment common in earlier generations of California Chardonnay. The Cabernet Sauvignon from Mohrhardt Ridge is a notable outlier in the lineup given that site's elevation and cooling influence, producing a leaner, higher-acid style compared to Napa or Alexander Valley benchmarks.
