Pian dell'Orino
Small Montalcino estate run by Caroline Pobitzer and Jan Hendrick Erbach, farming biodynamically on the southwestern slope. Two single-vineyard Brunellos, Vigneti del Versante and Bassolino di Sopra, define the range.
### History Pian dell'Orino is a small family estate in Montalcino, owned and run by Caroline Pobitzer and Jan Hendrick Erbach, a German-Italian couple who came to the property in the late 1990s. They were not born into the wine trade; they chose this ground deliberately, acquiring a modest holding on the southwestern flank of the hill and building it into one of the more quietly respected addresses in the denomination. The estate takes its name from the land itself, a field associated with the wild boar that still move through the surrounding macchia. Over the course of roughly two decades, Pobitzer and Erbach shifted the farming toward biodynamic practice, a commitment that now sits at the center of how the property is managed and how they talk about the wines.
### Vineyards The estate sits on the southwestern side of Montalcino, an area that tends toward warmer, drier conditions than the cooler northeastern exposures around Sant'Angelo in Colle's upper reaches, though the elevation moderates ripening. Soils in this part of the hill are predominantly galestro and alberese, the schist-like and clay-limestone mix common to the better Montalcino sites. Pian dell'Orino farms biodynamically and has held Demeter certification. The two principal vineyard parcels behind the single-vineyard Brunellos, Vigneti del Versante and Bassolino di Sopra, are distinct in aspect and character, with Bassolino di Sopra sitting at higher elevation and typically producing a more structured, slower-developing wine. Total holdings are modest, keeping production limited.
### Winemaking The house style leans toward restraint and precision rather than extraction. Fermentation relies on native yeasts, and the cellar work is handled with minimal intervention as a guiding principle rather than a marketing position. Aging takes place in large Slavonian oak casks rather than small barriques, which is consistent with a more classical Brunello approach and keeps the oak influence in the background. The Rosso di Montalcino is vinified to drink earlier but is not treated as an afterthought; it draws from younger vines and declassified fruit and shows the house character clearly at a lower price point. The Piandorino, a Sangiovese-based wine outside the Brunello disciplinare, functions as an entry-level expression of the estate. Bottling is done with minimal or no fining and filtration. The two Brunello crus are the central focus of the portfolio and are the wines that have drawn the most critical attention, particularly for their ability to age without sacrificing freshness in their youth.
