Marquis d'Angerville
Marquis d'Angerville is one of Volnay's benchmark estates, known for precise, age-worthy Pinot Noir from some of the appellation's most celebrated premier cru sites, including the monopole Clos des Ducs.
History
The d'Angerville family has shaped Volnay's reputation for well over a century. The estate rose to particular prominence under the Marquis Jacques d'Angerville, who in the 1930s became a central figure in one of Burgundy's most consequential disputes: the widespread adulteration and fraudulent labeling of Burgundian wines by négociants. Rather than sell his grapes or wine to merchants he did not trust, d'Angerville began bottling and selling his wines directly, making the estate among the earliest in the Côte de Beaune to practice domaine bottling as a matter of principle rather than commercial convenience. That stance, taken at considerable personal and financial risk, helped set a standard that other growers eventually followed.
Jacques d'Angerville managed the estate until his death in 1952, after which his son Renaud took over and maintained the same exacting approach for decades. Guillaume d'Angerville, representing the current generation, assumed direction in 2003 and has overseen a period of quiet but meaningful evolution. Under Guillaume, the estate extended its reach beyond Volnay, most notably acquiring parcels in Meursault's Santenots, a premier cru site that straddles the boundary with Volnay and has long produced red wine of notable structure. The estate remains family-owned and is considered one of the reference points for Volnay as an appellation.
Vineyards
The estate's holdings are concentrated in Volnay, with the Clos des Ducs serving as its most important site. Clos des Ducs is a monopole, meaning d'Angerville owns the entirety of the climat, a walled parcel situated on the upper slope of Volnay with a mix of limestone and clay soils and an easterly exposure that moderates ripening. Other significant premier cru parcels include Champans, one of Volnay's larger and more expressive sites, along with holdings in Taillepieds and Fremiers. The estate also works with Meursault Santenots, which, despite its address, produces red wine from Pinot Noir and is classified as Volnay Santenots when bottled as such.
The domaine farms organically, a commitment that Guillaume d'Angerville has formalized and deepened since taking over. Vine age varies across the holdings but includes old vines in several key parcels, which contributes to the concentration and precision the wines are known for.
Winemaking
The cellar approach at d'Angerville favors restraint and clarity over extraction. Fermentations are conducted with a relatively modest proportion of whole clusters, though this varies by vintage and vineyard. The wines are aged in oak barrels, with the proportion of new oak kept conservative by the standards of prestige Burgundy; the intent is for the fruit and site to remain legible rather than for wood to impose itself. Aging runs for roughly twelve to eighteen months depending on the cuvee. The wines are typically bottled without heavy intervention, and fining and filtration are used sparingly if at all.
The Clos des Ducs is the signature wine and the one most associated with the estate's identity: it tends toward precision and vertical structure rather than breadth, and it rewards extended cellaring. The village and broader premier cru bottlings offer earlier access to the house style, while the Meursault Santenots demonstrates that the estate's precision extends to white wine as well. The Bourgogne-level wines, including an Aligoté, round out the range and reflect the same unfussy approach applied at a less elevated price point.
