M. Sorrel
M. Sorrel is a small family domaine based in Tain-l'Hermitage, producing benchmark Syrah and Marsanne from the hill's most prized lieux-dits, including Le Gréal and Les Rocoules.
History
M. Sorrel is a small, family-run domaine based in Tain-l'Hermitage, on the left bank of the Rhône in the northern reaches of the appellation. The estate has been in the Sorrel family for generations, with Marc Sorrel taking over from his father Henri and establishing the domaine's current reputation through the 1980s and 1990s. Marc's son Alexis has since joined and taken on increasing responsibility, representing a quiet generational handover that has kept the estate's identity largely intact. The domaine is small by any standard, with a limited number of hectares spread across both Hermitage and Crozes-Hermitage, which keeps production volumes modest and allocation tight. The family's association with the hill of Hermitage over decades has given them access to some of its most sought-after parcels, and the wines have long featured on the lists of serious French restaurants and in the cellars of collectors who follow the northern Rhône closely.
Vineyards
The domaine holds parcels on the granite-dominated hill of Hermitage, including holdings in Le Méal and Le Greffieux, which together constitute the lieu-dit bottled as Le Gréal, a name that combines the two. Les Rocoules, the source of one of the domaine's two white Hermitage cuvées, is a section of the hill known for its heavier, more clay-inflected soils, which tend to produce Marsanne of considerable weight and aging potential. The other white parcels contribute to the straightforward Hermitage Blanc. Crozes-Hermitage holdings extend the range into the broader appellation surrounding the hill, where soils and exposures are more varied. Specific farming certifications are not widely documented for this domaine; conventional practices are most commonly referenced in the literature, though the small scale of the operation allows for attentive vineyard work.
Winemaking
The red wines at M. Sorrel are made in a relatively traditional northern Rhône style: Syrah is fermented with some whole clusters depending on the vintage, aged in oak barrels of varying ages, and bottled without heavy intervention. Le Gréal is the flagship red, drawn from the older-vine parcels in Le Méal and Le Greffieux, and it receives longer élevage than the domaine's standard Hermitage. The whites, both the Hermitage Blanc and Les Rocoules, are based on Marsanne and are known for their ability to close down in youth and open over many years in bottle; Les Rocoules in particular is regarded as a long-game wine. Oak use is present but not dominant. The domaine does not have a reputation for heavy extraction or new-oak showmanship, and the wines tend to reward patience more than they reward early opening.
