Leitz

History

Weingut Leitz is based in Rüdesheim am Rhein, at the western end of the Rheingau where the river bends sharply south and the vineyards pivot from east-facing to south-facing slopes. Johannes Leitz took over the family estate in the late 1980s, inheriting a small operation and rebuilding it steadily through the 1990s into one of the Rheingau's more visible names internationally. The growth was genuine rather than sudden: Leitz expanded vineyard holdings, sharpened the range, and built an export presence, particularly in the United States, without abandoning the estate's roots in Rüdesheim's historic sites. The winery remains family-owned and operated, with Johannes Leitz the central figure in its direction.

Vineyards

Leitz holds parcels in several of Rüdesheim's most significant sites, including Berg Schlossberg, Berg Roseneck, and Berg Rottland, the steep south-facing slopes that drop toward the Rhine and are among the Rheingau's most capable addresses for Riesling. Berg Schlossberg, the source of the estate's Grosses Gewächs, is dominated by blue slate and quartzite, which contributes to the minerally, structured character the wine is known for. The Rüdesheimer Kirchenpfad, used for the Kabinett Feinherb, sits in a somewhat gentler position. The steep sites are largely worked by hand given the gradient. Specific hectare totals and formal certification details are not confirmed here, but the estate has been associated with sustainable practices in the vineyard.

Winemaking

Leitz produces a wide range by Rheingau standards, running from the Eins Zwei Dry series (a straightforward, reliably dry entry point available in Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, and Pinot Noir Rosé) through the Kabinett and Spätlese registers and up to the Grosses Gewächs tier. The Eins Zwei Dry bottlings are made for early drinking and clean, direct fruit. The site-specific and Prädikat wines receive more careful treatment, with fermentation typically in traditional large oval casks (Stückfass) that allow slow, gentle development without imparting oak flavor. Residual sugar levels vary intentionally across the range, and the feinherb designations, used on both the Kirchenpfad Kabinett and the Pinot Noir Rosé, indicate off-dry wines that fall outside the strict Prädikat sweetness definitions but are not fully trocken. The Berg Schlossberg Grosses Gewächs is the flagship, harvested from the steep slate sites and aged to develop the tensile, slow-building character the site can produce in good vintages. The estate also makes Weissburgunder, which sits outside the Riesling-focused core but reflects the Rheingau's growing interest in white Burgundy varieties.
