Jean-Claude Ramonet
Ramonet is one of Chassagne-Montrachet's most storied domaines, holding parcels across the village's finest premiers crus and multiple grands crus, including Montrachet itself. The whites are benchmark expressions of the Côte de Beaune.
### History The Ramonet domaine traces its roots to Pierre Ramonet, who built the estate's reputation through much of the twentieth century and was widely regarded as one of the great white Burgundy producers of his generation. The domaine is based in Chassagne-Montrachet despite carrying the Puligny address in some references, and it draws the majority of its holdings from Chassagne. Pierre's grandsons, Noël and Jean-Claude Ramonet, took over management and have continued to run the estate as a family operation. The transition between generations was gradual rather than abrupt, and the house style has remained largely consistent across eras. Ramonet occupies a specific place in the Burgundy hierarchy: not a négociant house, not a moderniser, but a domaine whose standing rests almost entirely on the quality of its vineyard portfolio and long accumulated reputation.
### Vineyards The domaine's holdings are concentrated in Chassagne-Montrachet, with parcels across several of the village's most respected premiers crus, including Les Ruchottes, Morgeot, and Boudriotte. Beyond the village appellation, Ramonet holds vines in Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet and Bâtard-Montrachet, and crucially a small parcel of Montrachet itself, one of the most coveted grand cru sites on the Côte de Beaune. The soils across these sites are predominantly limestone-rich with varying clay content, typical of the Chassagne and Puligny slope. Specific farming practices for the domaine are not extensively documented in public records; the estate has not sought organic or biodynamic certification, though vine age across the portfolio is generally significant, contributing to naturally lower yields.
### Winemaking Ramonet's whites are fermented and aged in oak barrels, with the proportion of new oak calibrated to the level of the wine: grands crus see more new wood, village wines considerably less. The house is not associated with heavy extraction or overtly reductive winemaking; the style tends toward richness and texture rather than austerity. Aging on lees in barrel is standard practice, consistent with the broader Chassagne approach. The wines have historically been released with some bottle age relative to the vintage, though the domaine does not have an unusually long élevage by Burgundian standards. Ramonet's Montrachet is the wines most often cited as a reference point for the appellation, notable for its density and concentration without sacrificing definition. The premiers crus from Chassagne, particularly Les Ruchottes, are regarded as among the finest expressions of those sites produced by any grower.
