Hirsch Vineyards

History

David Hirsch planted his remote Fort Ross-Seaview property in the 1980s, well before the Sonoma Coast had any meaningful commercial identity as a wine region. The site, perched on coastal ridgelines above Cazadero, was considered marginal by California standards at the time: too cold, too far from established appellations, too difficult to farm. That reputation reversed course as the wines aged and the broader industry caught up to what Hirsch had been doing quietly for years. For much of its early history the estate supplied fruit to some of California's most respected Pinot Noir producers, functioning as a grower vineyard rather than a label in its own right. The transition to estate bottling under the Hirsch Vineyards name brought the property's distinct character into focus as a singular voice rather than a shared raw material. Jasmine Hirsch has been central to the estate's direction and identity for well over a decade, handling sales, communication, and the broader positioning of the brand with unusual directness and specificity about place.

Vineyards

The vineyard sits at elevations ranging roughly from 1,000 to 1,200 feet on the True Sonoma Coast, close enough to the Pacific that marine influence is constant rather than occasional. The San Andreas Fault bisects the property, and the resulting soil complexity is genuine rather than rhetorical: Franciscan Complex geology dominates, with heavily fractured, well-drained soils that stress vines without starving them. Individual blocks have been named and farmed separately for years, including East Ridge, West Ridge, Raschen Ridge, and the San Andreas Fault block itself, each reflecting distinct aspects of exposure and soil depth. The property is certified organic, and farming is attentive to the point of being intensive given the terrain. Yields are naturally low. The fog layer that blankets much of the Sonoma Coast typically sits below the vineyard in the morning, burning off to allow afternoon sun before coastal winds bring temperatures back down sharply by evening, producing long hang times and slow, even ripening.

Winemaking

The wines are made with an emphasis on site legibility over winemaker intervention. Native yeast fermentations are standard, and the cellar approach is restrained in terms of new oak, with the estate Pinots typically seeing a modest percentage of new barrels relative to California norms. Whole-cluster inclusion varies by vintage and block rather than following a fixed formula. The lineup is organized to reflect the vineyard's internal geography: the Estate and Estate Reserve sit at the top of the hierarchy, while single-block bottlings from East Ridge, West Ridge, Raschen Ridge, and the San Andreas Fault block allow direct comparison across the property's geological and topographical variation. The Bohan-Dillon Pinot Noir draws from younger vines and offers an earlier-drinking profile without sacrificing the cool-climate structure that defines the estate. A small amount of Chardonnay is also produced from the estate. Across all bottlings, the house style runs toward tension and restraint rather than weight, with tannin structure that rewards patience even in lighter vintages.
