G.B. Burlotto

LangheItaly

One of Barolo's oldest estates, G.B. Burlotto operates from Verduno and is known for benchmark Barolo from historic crus alongside rare Pelaverga Verduno, the light-bodied red peculiar to that village.

History

G.B. Burlotto is among the most historically significant estates in the Langhe, with roots reaching back to the nineteenth century in Verduno, a small commune at the northern end of the Barolo production zone. Giovan Battista Burlotto established the domaine at a time when Barolo was already attracting serious attention, and the estate supplied wine to the Italian royal court, a distinction that brought early recognition. The property passed through successive generations and eventually came under the stewardship of Marina Burlotto, who worked alongside her cousin Fabio Alessandria, a winemaker who became central to the estate's modern identity. Alessandria has been closely associated with a return to Verduno's classical character: lighter-framed, aromatic Barolo that reflects the village's particular limestone-rich soils rather than chasing the weightier profile associated with La Morra or Serralunga. The estate remains family-held and small in scale, a deliberate choice that has kept it outside the mainstream commercial circuit even as its reputation among serious collectors has grown steadily.

Vineyards

Verduno sits at the northwestern edge of the Barolo appellation and is distinguished by its prevalence of Tortonian soils, characterized by compact calcareous marl with a relatively high proportion of limestone. These soils tend to produce Nebbiolo with pronounced perfume and firm but finely grained tannin, leaning more toward structure through acidity than sheer extract. Burlotto's most celebrated holding is in the Monvigliero cru, widely regarded as one of Verduno's finest vineyard sites and increasingly recognized as one of the great Nebbiolo sites in the entire zone. Beyond Nebbiolo, the estate grows Pelaverga Piccolo, the ancient red variety that is almost exclusive to Verduno and difficult to find at serious quality level outside a handful of producers. The range also includes Barbera, Dolcetto, Freisa, and Sauvignon Blanc, the last of which is an unusual choice for the Langhe and points to an experimental streak within an otherwise tradition-anchored portfolio. Specific certified farming status is not widely documented, but the estate is understood to work with careful, low-intervention viticulture.

Winemaking

Fabio Alessandria's approach in the cellar is broadly classical: long macerations for the Barolo, with aging conducted primarily in large Slavonian oak casks (botti) rather than small French barriques. This keeps the wines from taking on obvious oak character and allows the aromatic transparency of Verduno Nebbiolo to read clearly in the glass. The resulting Barolos tend to be relatively pale in color, intensely floral, and structured around acidity, with tannins that are present but not aggressive in good vintages. The Pelaverga Verduno is made with a light touch appropriate to the variety, which is thin-skinned and produces wines closer in weight to a serious Pinot Noir than to Nebbiolo. The two Sauvignon Blancs, labeled Dives and Vividis, suggest some differentiation by site or selection, which is uncommon enough in the Langhe to draw notice. The Freisa, another old Piedmontese variety that many producers have abandoned, is bottled in a style that highlights the grape's characteristic tartness and wild berry profile. Across the range, restraint is the consistent thread: these are wines made to age and to reward patience rather than to impress immediately.
