Clos des Papes

One of Châteauneuf-du-Pape's most respected domaines, Clos des Papes has been in the Avril family for generations, producing both red and white wines that consistently rank among the appellation's finest.

History

Clos des Papes has been owned and operated by the Avril family for well over a century, making it one of the longer-established domaines in Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Paul-Vincent Avril, who took over from his father Vincent, has been the central figure in shaping the estate's modern reputation. Under his stewardship, the domaine built a following among serious wine drinkers and critics without repositioning itself as a prestige boutique operation. It remains a family estate in the traditional sense: modest in its self-presentation, consistent in its output, and deeply rooted in the appellation's conventions while exercising real precision in execution. The name itself references the historical papal connection that defines Châteauneuf-du-Pape's identity, though the Avrilfamily's own history in the region long predates any celebrity the estate has more recently acquired.

Vineyards

The domaine holds parcels spread across several of the appellation's distinct soil types, including the large rounded galets roulés that define the most photographed sections of Châteauneuf, as well as sandier and more clay-limestone soils in other parts of the estate. This fragmentation across multiple lieux-dits is deliberate; the Avrilsbelieve that blending across different soils and exposures produces more complete wines than single-parcel bottlings would. The total holdings are modest by industrial standards but substantial for a family domaine in this appellation. Both red and white varieties are grown. Farming is conducted with care and the domaine has moved toward more sustainable practices over time, though it has not formally certified under organic or biodynamic standards as far as public records consistently confirm.

Winemaking

The red wines are built on a Grenache-dominant blend, as is standard in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, with a range of permitted varieties completing the assemblage. Paul-Vincent Avril has been notably resistant to the trend toward high extraction, new oak, and concentrated blockbuster styling that swept parts of the appellation in the 1990s and 2000s. The reds are vinified to preserve freshness and structure rather than to maximize weight, with aging in older foudres and large format oak that imparts little to no new wood character. The result is wines that are accessible in youth but built to age. The white wines, produced in smaller quantities, are taken seriously at the domaine and are vinified to preserve aromatic precision and acidity, relatively rare qualities in white Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Fining and filtration practices are restrained. The domaine produces a single red and a single white under the Clos des Papes label, with no second wine or negociant tier complicating the range.
