Camille Giroud

Camille Giroud is a Gevrey-Chambertin négociant with deep roots in the Côte d'Or, producing wines across a wide arc of appellations from Santenay to Charmes-Chambertin with a focus on classical structure and restraint.

History

Camille Giroud was founded in Beaune in the nineteenth century as a négociant house, one of the older trading establishments in the Côte d'Or. For much of its history the house operated quietly, building a reputation less on visibility than on cellared stock: Giroud was known for holding wines for extended periods before release, a practice that gave older vintages unusual depth by the time they reached the market. The house changed hands in the early 2000s when a group of American investors acquired it, bringing in outside capital and a renewed focus on quality across the range. Ann Colgin of Napa Valley was among the investors associated with that transition, which brought Giroud wider attention in the English-language wine press. The winemaking direction shifted toward earlier-drinking, more transparent wines while retaining the house's commitment to sourcing from respected sites across the Côte de Beaune and Côte de Nuits. The estate is based in Beaune rather than Gevrey-Chambertin proper, though its holdings and sourcing extend north into the Gevrey appellation and its grands crus.

Vineyards

Giroud sources from a broad geography, which is consistent with its négociant structure. The wines reviewed here span from Santenay in the south through Chassagne-Montrachet, Volnay, and Corton, and north into Morey-Saint-Denis, Chambolle-Musigny, and Gevrey-Chambertin. This range reflects purchasing relationships as much as owned parcels. Corton Les Renards sits on the southern flank of the Corton hill, with soils that tend toward more iron-rich clay compared to the northern Corton sectors. Charmes-Chambertin, the largest of the Gevrey grands crus, occupies mid-slope ground below Mazoyeres with marl-heavy soils that typically produce rounder, earlier-accessible wines than Chambertin itself. Chambolle-Musigny Les Borniques is a premier cru on the village's northern boundary, sharing the lighter, more fragrant character associated with that commune. Specific details on owned versus purchased fruit, farming certifications, and individual parcel sizes are not consistently documented in public sources for Giroud's full range.

Winemaking

The house style under recent direction has moved toward wines that are relatively transparent and fruit-forward by Burgundian négociant standards, without sacrificing structural integrity. Fermentation is carried out in traditional vessels, with varying proportions of whole-cluster inclusion depending on the appellation and vintage character. Oak usage is present but measured; the wines are not heavily extracted or marked by new wood. The white wines, including the Chassagne-Montrachet Les Vergers, are barrel-fermented in the standard Burgundian fashion. Giroud does not make dramatic claims about winemaking intervention, and the wines read as classical in orientation without being rigid. The range across multiple appellations and classification levels reflects a négociant's ability to assemble across the Côte d'Or rather than the depth of a single-domaine specialist.
