Benanti
Benanti is among the producers most responsible for bringing Etna to serious international attention, farming old-vine nerello mascalese and carricante across several named contrade on the volcano's slopes.
History
Benanti was founded by Giuseppe Benanti in the late 1980s, at a moment when Etna was treated as a bulk-wine backwater and its ancient vineyards were being abandoned or pulled up. Giuseppe, a pharmacist by training with deep roots in Catania, set out to demonstrate that the mountain's indigenous varieties, carricante and nerello mascalese above all, were capable of wines worth serious attention. His timing proved prescient. Over the following two decades, as a wider generation of producers arrived on Etna, Benanti was already there with a body of work and a map of named sites that others would borrow as a framework.
The estate has remained family-controlled, with the second generation taking on increasing responsibility for both vineyard and commercial direction. It has not been without internal turbulence: the family navigated a period of restructuring in the 2010s that affected some key working relationships, though the core estate and its contrade holdings remained intact. Benanti is not the flashiest name on Etna today, but it is one of the foundational ones, and its contrada-designated wines predate the fashion for single-site labeling that now defines the appellation's upper tier.
Vineyards
Benanti farms across multiple named contrade on both the northern and eastern flanks of Etna. The eastern slope, centered on the Milo area, is the historic heartland for carricante and the Etna Bianco Superiore designation; Contrada Rinazzo sits here, at elevation, on soils of volcanic ash and decomposed lava with good mineral drainage. On the northern slope, Contrade Monte Serra and Calderara Sottana are planted primarily to nerello mascalese, the dominant red variety of the DOC. Cavaliere, another key holding, contributes to both the rosso and bianco ranges.
Vineyard ages vary but include genuinely old vines, some trained in the traditional alberello (bush-vine) method that is characteristic of the mountain's pre-phylloxera plantings. Altitudes across the holdings range broadly, with the higher sites bringing marked diurnal temperature shifts that preserve acidity. Certified organic or biodynamic status has not been consistently documented in public sources; specific farming certification details are not confirmed here.
Winemaking
The cellar approach at Benanti is relatively classical for the appellation: fermentation in temperature-controlled stainless steel is used for freshness-oriented cuvees, while the single-contrada reds spend time in large-format oak, typically Slavonian botti rather than small barriques, which allows the nerello to develop without heavy oak overlay. The nerello mascalese grape is thin-skinned and prone to oxidation, so handling choices matter; Benanti's reds tend toward transparency and mid-weight structure rather than extraction.
The Etna Bianco Superiore from Rinazzo is among the estate's most considered whites, with carricante's naturally high acidity and saline mineral character most legible at that altitude and on that soil type. Riserva designations on the reds indicate extended aging before release. Across the range, the house style favors definition over richness, which suits the variety and the mountain well.
