Auntsfield

MarlboroughNew Zealand

Auntsfield is a single-vineyard focused estate in Marlborough's Southern Valleys, built around a historic home block and best known for precise, site-specific Sauvignon Blanc and increasingly serious Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.

History

Auntsfield takes its name from an old property in the Southern Valleys of Marlborough, one of the subregions that has drawn attention for producing Sauvignon Blanc with more weight and textural complexity than the Wairau Plain benchmarks that made the region famous. The estate has long been family-connected and operates with the kind of continuity that shows in its vineyard record: a consistent focus on a single home block rather than sourcing across the region. It sits outside the large corporate structures that dominate Marlborough production, which gives it latitude to make decisions vineyard by vineyard and vintage by vintage without volume targets driving the program. The South Oaks label appears as a second tier in the range, indicating a deliberate separation between the top single-vineyard tier and wines drawn from other fruit sources or younger vines.

Vineyards

The home vineyard sits in the Southern Valleys, where the soils tend toward clay-enriched loams over stony subsoils, distinct from the alluvial gravels of the Wairau. This heavier soil structure slows drainage and moderates vine stress, which translates in the wines to riper phenolics and a broader mid-palate compared to the leaner, more immediately aromatic style of the valley floor. The Southern Valleys also run cooler and more sheltered than the open Wairau, which extends hang time without sacrificing acidity. Specific hectarage, row orientation, and clone detail are not publicly documented in detail. Farming certifications have not been prominently stated, so conventional or sustainability-program viticulture is the reasonable assumption.

Winemaking

The Sauvignon Blanc program is the core of the range, with the Single Vineyard bottling representing the estate's clearest argument for site specificity in a variety that is often treated as interchangeable across Marlborough. The wines show more structure and less overt aromatics than the regional average, suggesting careful management of skin contact, pressing, and fermentation temperature. The Chardonnay and Pinot Noir Single Vineyard releases indicate genuine ambition beyond Sauvignon Blanc, though the cellar approach for those wines, including oak regime and fermentation vessels, has not been detailed publicly. The Nature's Path Sauvignon Blanc, by name, suggests a lower-intervention or minimal-additive approach within that bottling, though specific claims about native yeast or unfined status have not been confirmed. The South Oaks Sauvignon Blanc functions as the more accessibly priced entry point to the range.
