Arlaud

A Chambolle-Musigny domaine with deep roots across the Côte de Nuits, Arlaud works a patchwork of premier and grand cru sites from Gevrey through Morey-Saint-Denis and into Chambolle, producing wines known for precision and aromatic clarity.

### History Arlaud is a family domaine based in Chambolle-Musigny, with origins stretching back several generations in the Côte de Nuits. The estate has been shaped over decades by successive family members who gradually expanded its vineyard holdings across multiple appellations. Cyprien Arlaud, who took over winemaking responsibilities in the early 2000s, is widely credited with lifting the domaine's profile considerably, refining both vineyard management and cellar work during a period when many small Burgundy estates were reassessing their methods. The domaine remains family-owned and operated, with Cyprien continuing to oversee production alongside other family members.

### Vineyards Arlaud's holdings are spread across some of the most compelling addresses in the central Côte de Nuits, including grand cru parcels in Clos Saint-Denis, Charmes-Chambertin, and Bonnes-Mares, alongside premier cru sites in Gevrey-Chambertin, Morey-Saint-Denis, and Chambolle-Musigny. The vineyards span a range of elevations and exposures typical of the escarpment between Gevrey and Chambolle, with soils shifting from the heavier, iron-rich limestone clays of Gevrey through the thinner, stonier ground of Morey and into the more silty, finely textured soils that characterise Chambolle at its best. The domaine has moved toward organic farming practices over time, and the vineyards are managed with minimal chemical intervention, though precise certification details are not always prominently documented in public sources.

### Winemaking Arlaud's cellar approach is restrained and relatively reductive in style. Whole-cluster inclusion is used to varying degrees depending on the vintage and the site, a practice Cyprien has discussed openly as a tool for structure and aromatic complexity rather than a fixed formula. Fermentation relies on native yeasts. Oak use is measured; the domaine does not favour heavy extraction or excessive new oak, and the wines are generally aged in a combination of new and used barrels, with the proportion of new wood kept low enough that it functions as seasoning rather than flavour. The resulting wines tend to be transparent to their origins: the grand cru Clos Saint-Denis shows the mineral tension and darker fruit character typical of that climat, while Bonnes-Mares carries the density and grip that Chambolle's northern boundary reliably provides. Across the range, the style prioritises length and definition over immediate weight.
