Aldo Conterno

BaroloItaly

Aldo Conterno is among Barolo's most respected traditionalist estates, producing single-vineyard wines from the Bussia hillside in Monforte d'Alba with a reputation for precision, longevity, and consistency across vintages.

History

Aldo Conterno established his estate in Monforte d'Alba in 1969, having split from the family operation he shared with his brother Giovanni , the two pursued genuinely different philosophies, a division that defined Barolo's broader traditionalist-modernist conversation for decades. Aldo's instinct was to slow things down: longer macerations, larger wood, unhurried aging. His estate, built around the Bussia Soprana hillside, became a reference point for what unhurried, site-focused Barolo could look like without any recourse to shortcuts.

Aldo died in 2012. His sons Franco, Stefano, and Giacomo had been working alongside him for years before that, and the transition was seamless in the sense that the winemaking philosophy didn't shift. The estate remains family-owned and family-run, with Giacomo taking the lead winemaking role. The continuity is audible in the wines , the house style has not been reinvented.

Vineyards

The estate's holdings are concentrated in Bussia, one of the more complex and historically significant MGAs in Monforte d'Alba. Within Bussia, Aldo Conterno farms several distinct parcels that are bottled separately: Romirasco, Cicala, and Colonnello, each with its own aspect and soil character, plus a Bussia bottling that draws from younger vines or a broader selection depending on the vintage. The soils in this part of Monforte are predominantly Helvetian in origin , compact Tortonian marls and calcareous clay , which contributes to wines with structure and the mineral tension that distinguishes Monforte from, say, La Morra. Altitude and southwest-facing exposures across much of Bussia translate to good ripeness without sacrificing acidity. Specific farming certification details are not publicly documented in detail, but the estate is understood to work conventionally.

Winemaking

Aldo Conterno ferments in large wooden vats with extended maceration , a traditional approach that extracts color, tannin, and aromatic complexity over time rather than through intervention. Aging takes place in large Slavonian oak casks (botti grandi), not barriques, which means the oak influence is background rather than flavor. The wines spend a substantial period in cask followed by bottle aging before release, meaning they arrive later to market than many peers and are already showing structural integration. The single-vineyard wines , Romirasco in particular , are considered the estate's flagship expressions, capable of aging for two to three decades in good vintages. Gran Bussia, a selection made only in the best years, is the estate's prestige bottling and among the most sought-after wines in the appellation.
