Mullineux Syrah Granite 2022

From Jakkalsfontein, a vineyard Mullineux has farmed for two decades and one that several respected growers continue to draw from. Hand-punched and aged first in used barrels, then in 2,000-liter foudres, the 2022 Granite Syrah opens with a mix of red and dark fruit, gravel dust, and cracked black pepper. More inward-looking than previous vintages, firm tannins greet you on entry, and the wine sits tight and a touch austere through a powdery, earthy close. There's real power here, but it's compressed rather than open. Give it three to four years and it should find its voice.
