From the Olifants River, Chris Alheit's 2017 Huilkrans was the most modest bottle of the evening and quietly outperformed far pricier company. The nose is a touch closed now, but patience draws out dried honey, fennel, dill, and a faint basalt thread. On the mouth, it's taut and mineral from the outset, honeysuckle and crushed rock give way to stem ginger and chai on a finish that holds and holds. A profound Chenin Blanc.
