Bernhard Ott Gemischter Satz 2015
A genuinely interesting origin story: Ott stumbled onto a gravelly old mixed planting, Welschriesling intertwined with Grüner Veltliner, Sauvignon, Riesling, Pinot Blanc and Chardonnay, tended by a grower on the verge of retirement. He ran most of the Welschriesling through intercellular fermentation before co-fermenting the remaining varieties together. The nose is seductive: ripe pear and pineapple lifted by lily-of-the-valley, plush yet fresh. On the palate it opens generously, but lime and pineapple keep things lively, their tartness cutting through the fruit weight. Lime zest and hazelnut add a savory edge that carries through a long, sustained finish. At 13% alcohol, an upper limit Ott expects to hold, given the severe crop losses from May hail, this is a field blend that earns its complexity honestly.
