F.X. Pichler Muskateller Federspiel Steinertal 2014

Grapefruit, lime and orange zest open with a distinct herbal edge — peppermint and sage weave through the citrus with real precision. There's a pull of saline tension through the mid-palate that keeps things lively, while a faint bead of dissolved CO2 adds lift and freshness. Extract is present and felt, yet the wine never feels heavy. The one caveat: a pronounced citrus peel bitterness pinches the finish slightly before it can fully unwind into something juicier. What makes this bottle historically notable is its scarcity — just 115 liters were produced from these rented Steinertal vines, a mere 13% of the Smaragd volume bottled in 2013, and the entire yield was aged in used barriques. The 2013 had been the first Smaragd-level F.X. Pichler Muskateller in years; this 2014 Federspiel, paradoxically, set a record of a different kind.
