Deep, lively ruby with a dark core. Licorice, graphite and bitter chocolate on the nose — reserved but focused, the oak influence from the new barriques sitting beneath the surface rather than dominating. On the palate it opens with more sweetness and weight than the Marcenasco bottling, then pulls tight through the mid-section, showing the firm, disciplined grip that defines the best wines of this vintage. Tannins are substantial and grippy, very much in charge right now, with the underlying fruit and mineral structure needing time to fully emerge. The finish is long and promising. Give this at least six to eight years before pulling a cork.
